Coagulant Dosing Systems
Coagulation dosing is the process where dissolved material found in swimming pool water is made into a more solidified state. The coagulant causes tiny particles to become attracted to one another forming a concentration in an action known as flocculation.
This concentration of particles is easier to trap within the filter, rather than passing through and back into the pool.
Removal of Infective Cryptosporidium cysts
Removal of Infective Giardia cysts
Filtration of Humic Acid (precursor of trihalomethanes)
Filtration of Phosphates (which encourage algae growth)
Improved water clarity due to less suspended material
Reduced chlorine consumption due to less impurities
Dosing systems are generally fully automated & compact
Very low maintenance

The coagulant dosing in general will aid the filtration process and help to gather bacteria. However, it’s more critical function is to capture the most harmful & problematic materials. These would otherwise pass through the filter and back into the pool causing more severe problems if left.
In particular, coagulants help with the removal of dangerous and infective Cryptosporidium & Giardia cysts. These are things which should always be considered as critically important for pool operators.
Which Coagulant?
There are a range of coagulants available and used for pool water clarification. Some of the more commonly know coagulants are:
PAC (polyaluminium chloride)
Sodium aluminate
Alum (aluminium sulphate, kibbled alum)
Iron chlorides/ Sulphates
PASS (polyaluminium sulphosilicate)
Cationic polyelectrolytes.
Coagulant selection is influenced by the conditions in which it will be used. A commonly used & understood coagulants in the UK swimming industry, for example, is PAC (polyaluminium chloride), an aluminium based coagulant.
PAC is recommended by the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG) and used in conjunction with many medium-rate filtration systems.
Another example, Cationic Polelectrolytes, can be used with high-rate filtration systems and can be added directly to the pool water.
Coagulant Dosing Systems
Total Leisure Engineering can supply and fit a typical PAC coagulant dosing system to suit your requirements. Generally installed as a stand-alone ‘dosing skid’, we have a range of options available. Manufacture is carried out in-house, therefore bespoke items can also be produced where necessary. Each dosing skid incorporates a bund for the PAC container, dedicated automatic dosing pump, plus all hose & fittings etc. These systems are compact and very easy to install & maintain to give virtually instant results.
If you are interested to learn more about coagulant dosing systems or have a specific project in mind we would be happy to take your call.
